Santa Cruz Mountains - With its redwood and fir-shrouded slopes, the Santa Cruz mountains make for some great summer riding. The mid-peninsula open space regions including El Corte de Madera (Skeggs) and the Russian Ridge to Saratoga Gap regions have great year-round mountain bike trails, but really shine when the more inland areas are just too hot. If you're looking for Santa Cruz mountain biking areas, Wilder Ranch, the Forest of the Nisene Marks and Soquel Demonstration Forest offer a variety of great rides for bikers of all levels.

Marin County Mountain Biking - Often called the birthplace of mountain biking, Marin County combines amazing rides with gorgeous scenery. Unfortunately, due to well-connected anti-bike groups, much of Marin's singletrack trails remain off-limits to Mountain bikers. The best exception to this is Camp Tamarancho, a Boy Scout Camp near Fairfax that allows mountain biking on its singletrack network. China Camp State Park also offers wide singletrack and fire roads and the gentle terrain is perfect for new riders. Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais, the areas closest to San Francisco offers great scenery, including ocean views through their extensive network of fire roads.
